Rajveer turned around and looked at Vaishnavi properly. She was still holding his hand, watching him with the same confidence she always carried whenever she had already made up her mind about something. Vaishnavi tightened her hold around his hand and started walking towards the house, gently pulling him along with her. Rajveer followed without resistance because he already knew she had probably skipped dinner while waiting for him.
"You always say that whatever I do for you will be the best for you. So tell me, do you really think I cannot find the best girl in the world for you?"
Rajveer looked down at their joined hands for a moment before looking back at her. He knew there was no point arguing with Vaishnavi when she spoke with that much certainty, but he still wanted her to understand his side.
"Yes, sweetheart, I know you will find the best girl for me. I never doubted that. But you need to understand that I simply do not want to get married. That is the only problem here."
He moved closer and placed a hand around her shoulder, walking beside her at an easy pace. His eyes briefly moved towards the dining room, already knowing she had probably kept everyone waiting because she wanted to wait for him.
"Then what do you expect me to do? Should I keep waiting until you become an old man before you finally decide that you are ready for marriage?"
A laugh escaped Rajveer as he shook his head. He glanced at her with amusement, completely unaffected by her attempt to make him feel guilty, because he knew she had been waiting for this argument for quite some time.
"Fine, sweetheart… I will not become old for you. I promise I will remain exactly the way I am, so you will not have to worry about waiting for an old man to get married."
Vaishnavi hit his shoulder and gave him an annoyed look. Rajveer only laughed again as they reached the dining table, where everyone had already been quietly watching their conversation from a distance.
"I do not want to hear your nonsense anymore. This is final, Rajveer. You are getting married, and I am not interested in listening to another excuse from you tonight."
By the time Vaishnavi finished speaking, they had reached the table. Shesha stopped with her spoon near her mouth and slowly lowered it, while Vishnu looked at his mother with an expression that showed he had not expected this conversation.
Akhil and Shikha, his younger brother and sister exchanged a quick glance, neither of them understanding how the conversation had suddenly reached marriage. Rajveer, however, seemed completely calm as he pulled a chair out for Vaishnavi before taking the seat beside her.
"You found the girl already, sweetheart?"
Vaishnavi sat down comfortably and looked at him with a proud smile. She picked up her spoon and glanced around the table before turning her attention back to Rajveer, clearly pleased that she had finally managed to surprise him.
"Of course I did. In fact, I found her a long time ago. Until now, I was only making sure whether she was truly good enough for you or not."
Rajveer gave a slow nod and picked up his plate. He did not ask another question immediately because he preferred eating quietly, and everyone at the table already knew better than to disturb him unnecessarily during dinner.
Vaishnavi served food onto his plate herself before serving some for herself. She watched him for a moment, her expression softening as she remembered how much he had grown since she first started teaching him about business.
"You are thirty now, Rajveer. You started learning the business with me, and today you own your own company. I am proud of how far you have come and how many heights you continue to reach."
Rajveer continued eating quietly, listening to every word without interrupting her. Vaishnavi knew he was paying attention even though he had not looked up once, so she continued speaking while keeping her voice calm.
"You do what you want, and you live the way you want. I never stopped you because I knew you would never do anything wrong. That is something I am proud of too."
She paused briefly before serving another piece of bread onto his plate. Her voice became softer as she looked at him, making it clear that this time she was not talking about business or his achievements.
"But I have some wishes too. I want to see you surrounded by your own family. I want to watch your family grow, and I want to know that someone will be beside you when I am no longer here."
Shesha had been listening quietly while eating. She glanced towards Vaishnavi with a small smile, then lowered her eyes to her plate again before looking towards Rajveer, who remained focused on his food.
Vishnu continued eating as well, but his attention kept moving between his mother and his son. He seemed unsure whether he should say something, especially after hearing how firmly Vaishnavi had already decided everything.
Akhil tried to look at Rajveer from the corner of his eyes without making it obvious. Shikha did not even attempt to hide her nervousness, keeping her attention fixed on her plate while quietly eating her dinner.
Shesha, meanwhile, ate a little faster than before. She seemed to understand only one thing clearly. Once dinner was over, the conversation about Rajveer's marriage would continue, and she did not want to be caught in the middle of it.
Rajveer finally looked at the table and noticed that Vaishnavi had been served properly as well. Without saying anything, he tore off a piece of bread, added some vegetables to it, and turned towards her.
He held the bite towards Vaishnavi, waiting until she accepted it before speaking. His expression remained calm, almost as if he had already decided that the easiest way to end the conversation was to postpone it.
"I want to eat peacefully, sweetheart. We will talk about this matter later, okay? You have not even eaten properly, and I know you were waiting for me before starting dinner."
Vaishnavi looked at him for a moment before accepting the food from his hand. She knew Rajveer well enough to understand that he would not discuss anything while eating, so she decided not to push him further.
She quietly focused on her meal, allowing the conversation to end for the moment. Rajveer did the same, eating without speaking while everyone else at the table remained unusually careful about what they said.
Vishnu occasionally looked towards his mother and then back at his son, clearly trying to understand what had happened before he arrived. Akhil continued eating quietly, stealing another careful glance at Rajveer.
Shikha kept her eyes lowered throughout the meal. She seemed far more uncomfortable than anyone else at the table, while Shesha finished her food quickly, already waiting for the moment dinner would finally end.
Rajveer remained completely composed, unaware of how much tension his grandmother's announcement had created around the table. For him, marriage was still a subject he had no intention of discussing tonight, no matter how determined Vaishnavi seemed.
Vaishnavi finished her food and quietly looked at Rajveer. A faint smile returned to her face because she knew her grandson better than anyone, and she also knew that once she decided something, he rarely managed to change her mind.
Rajveer took his time finishing his dinner. Once he was done, he carefully wiped his fingertips with a napkin, making sure there was nothing left on them. He then gently wiped the corners of his lips before reaching for his glass.
Vaishnavi watched him quietly, knowing his habits well. Shesha had already finished eating and sat impatiently, waiting to hear what would happen next. She kept glancing between Vaishnavi and Rajveer without saying anything.
Rajveer lifted his glass and took two slow sips of water. He placed it back on the table before finally looking towards Vaishnavi, his expression calm and unreadable.
"Okay. Who is the girl?"
Vaishnavi smiled immediately. She had been waiting for that question since the moment she mentioned the marriage, and now she looked completely satisfied that Rajveer had finally asked instead of trying to avoid the conversation.
"Kanak."
Rajveer narrowed his eyes slightly. The name sounded familiar. He remained quiet for a moment, searching through his memory, trying to remember where he had heard it before.
Then Vaishnavi's voice from earlier conversations came back to him clearly, repeating the same name in his mind.
"If Kanak had not been there, this work would never have been completed…. Kanak handled everything for me today… I love this girl..."
His expression changed slightly as the memory settled into place. He looked at Vaishnavi again, his voice soft and measured as he finally connected the name with the person he had heard about so many times.
"Kanak…. Your assistant Kanak?"
Vaishnavi's smile widened.
"Yes. Kanak Parmar, my assistant."
Rajveer nodded slowly. He did not look surprised anymore, but there was a quiet curiosity in his eyes. He leaned back slightly before looking at Vaishnavi with a calm expression.
"Okay. As you say, sweetheart. But I want to meet her. I want to see for myself what kind of girl she is."
Vaishnavi nodded immediately. She seemed pleased by how calmly he had accepted the idea, even though she knew he was still trying to understand what she had planned for him.
"I will come to your room later. We will talk more about her then."
Rajveer simply nodded and stood from his chair. He gave Vaishnavi one last look before leaving the dining room, while the others remained seated in an uncomfortable silence.
Vishnu tightened his grip around his spoon, his expression becoming increasingly disturbed. He looked towards Vaishnavi as if he could not believe what he had just heard, while Shesha remained silent beside him.
"Kanak Parmar?... Your assistant?... Your old assistant? Keshav Parmar's daughter?... That girl from such a simple family? You could not find anyone else for my son's marriage?"
Vaishnavi slowly turned towards him. She looked at Vishnu for a few seconds before briefly glancing at Shesha, then returned her attention to him without showing the slightest discomfort.
"Why? You married the woman you wanted. I am choosing a wife for my grandson according to my choice. So tell me, what exactly is your problem?"
Vishnu remained silent for a moment, but Vaishnavi did not look away. Her voice stayed calm, though there was something firm behind every word she spoke next.
"Have you always had a problem with my choices, Vishnu?"
Silence settled over the dining table. Shesha lowered her eyes while Akhil and Shikha exchanged another uncertain glance. Vishnu continued holding the spoon tightly, but this time, he had no answer ready for his mother's question.
